daveholmes:

This is the “rock bottom” moment for our political culture, right? I mean, it has to be.

I promise. You’re not me.

Dear Christine,

While it’s true I’m tired of back-room dealings in Washington, I heavily doubt you’d do what I’d do.

For example, would you raise taxes on people making over $250,000 a year? Let’s say, from 36% to 39%? Would you decide that someone taking home $1,000,000 in profit could afford to live on $500,000 a year? I mean, I keep my family of four afloat on significantly less. If someone making a million dollars says he can’t live on half that, I have to ask, what’s wrong with him?

Would you argue that a business owner should pay a little more for the upkeep of infrastructure, since the trucks that carry his products from factories and warehouses to his storefronts exact more damage to the roads than my little Scion XA? Would you argue for higher fuel prices to force the hand of more and better fuel efficient technologies?

Would you prevent Wall Street from formulating fictitious monetary markets for the sake of speculation? Would you raise taxes on investment income to encourage the re-investment of capital gains into manufacturing, service, or technology businesses? Would you pull money from military spending and re-allocate it to education? Would you increase arts funding? What kind of incentives would you offer farmers who stopped growing corn and diversified their crops? How would you begin to dismantle the large media, agricultural, and retail conglomerates that are looking more and more like the monopolies of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries?

I understand your desire to change Washington. What are you going to do to make it happen?

Sincerely,

Greg Turner

p.s. I also am not a witch. so we have that in common as well I guess.
