Things I’d Like To See #1

ckck:

Google Historic Maps.

It’d be just like Google Maps, only you could enter a year and see what the world looked like at that time. For example, you could go back to 1989 and see a map of East and West Germany, and the wall that divided Berlin. Perhaps see what Africa looked like when it was still mostly European colonies, or go back a hundred years and see the borders of Austria-Hungary, which was larger than France in size. Or see maps of the U.S. when it only had 13 states or just after it had made the Louisiana Purchase. Of course you can already see these things now too, but there’s no unified, interactive way of seeing a map of the world at any given point in time.

It’d probably be a near-impossible thing to create since it would require so much research and work, but it sure would be cool (said the history geek) so Google, make it happen.

This would be amazing and brilliant and one of the most useful things ever.  To begin with, they could limit it to major cities during or just before particular times of change.  Rome before it was sacked; Berlin before the wall came down.  Hiroshima before we dropped the bomb.
