1. If I buy a full-price hard-cover book, give me the e-book for free. I don’t mean some super-snazzy, illustration-rich multimedia experience. I just want the book in electronic format. The system works well on me when I’m buying records. I bought 1000 Hertz on vinyl because it came with a cd. I bought High Violet on vinyl because it came with a free .MP3 download I could use…three times, I think.
2. Make e-books ridiculously easy to share. In fact, you should go ahead and make a bother screen that activates when someone reaches a certain point or page or number of views. It should say, “Hey, share this book with your friends.” Let them give it away. It’ll help keep reading alive and help keep up an interest in books. And, I’ll bet it helps to sell books, too. Either paper copies of shared e-books, or books by the same author or on the same subject.
Two bonus ideas!: stop being owned by giant multinational corporations, and quit publishing so many cookbooks.
