I’ve been thinking about the future lately, and that always makes me think about the present. I get real caught up in how life will be that I tend to forget how awesome life is at the moment, and I get bogged down with dreams and forget to live it the fuck up right now while I have it. All that being said, it’s very healthy to keep the future in your sights and work towards certain goals:
Current 5 year plan
- Save up $XX,XXX
- Finish “apprenticeship” phase
- Leave New York
- Move to XXXXXXXX, XX
- Establish self in city center
- Open a gallery
- Move closer to ocean
- Live
It’s good to do both. Also, always keep at it. I don’t know how many people I’ve watched squander dreams or let them slip away because they thought it was taking too much time, because they’d set some goal in their head, some age they’d reach when they’d have it all figured out. And when that age came and went, they decided to go ahead and hang it up, to let things drift into background and then into nothing and they lived their quiet lives. But I see them, and their smiles are brittle at the edge, and you can tell. You can tell they didn’t quite do what they expected and consider themselves failed or flawed in some fundamental way. The thing is, they’re not failures, they were just impatient.
