I once tried to come up with a definition of art. Always a risky enterprise. But the best I could come up with was: create an arbitrary set of rules, and then follow them slavishly. You set up an idea of what you should and you should not do, and then you strictly adhere to it. You try to develop a world view or an aesthetic, however you want to describe it. Maybe it’s even an idea of rectitude.
