City Arts & Lectures: John Hodgman Interview
That’s the full, one-hour version of my interview with Mr. Hodgman for KQED’s swell City Arts & Lectures program.
Philanthropic addendum: Gainesville’s own WUFT, Classic 89 is an affiliate station for the City Arts and Lectures series. If you enjoy the show (and I think you will) and are one of my local followers, you might consider donating to the station. Their new talk-heavy format is great, but I would guess isn’t cheap.
Botanical addendum: Should you try to replicate the Hodgman kick, note that he most likely used the fuyu persimmon variety. This persimmon variety is non-astringent (unlike its botanical cousin, the hachiya) and when ripe tastes much like a cross between a fuji apple and a pumpkin.
In my yard, the squirrels usually ransack the fuyu tree well before any are ready for human consumption and I curse their rodent souls because the fruit are wonderful and delicious. The squirrels don’t touch our hachiya persimmons because they (the persimmons) are disgusting until fully ripe, and then are too soft to pick by hand or paw.
